Updated information for our current learning plan due to COVID-19. *Last updated: Monday, November 16th, 2020

Message From the Principal

Dear GMS Families, due to the number of staff quarantines at Grand Mountain School, we do not have coverage to provide in-person learning for grades Pre-Kindergarten through grade 8.

Starting Tuesday, November 17th, all Pre-K-5th grade students at GMS will join our secondary (6th - 8th grade) students by going full distance learning until Thanksgiving break.

We will provide an update before Thanksgiving break on the return date of students.

*UPDATE (November 16th at 4:00 pm):

Students in grades 3-8 will be distance learning beginning November 30, 2020, until January 15, 2021, based upon the information we have at this time. Students in grades K-2 will be in-person on November 30th as is currently planned.

Devices

Devices (Chromebooks in grades 1-5 and I-pads for Kindergarten) have been assigned to all students in grades K-5. These devices were sent home with those students in need of a device for distance learning, those students not needing a device at home, their assigned device is at school. If your child did not take their device home today and you need a device please contact the school after 8 am and we can arrange for pick-up. If your child is currently under quarantine and needs a device we can arrange for the transfer to their new assigned device on or after November 30th.

If you need an internet hotspot those are available from the district by contacting SA Wilson/ WSD3 Technology Department

Students who have Special Education services in grades 6-8 will return to in-person learning, starting on Nov. 30, 2020, and will remain in this schedule until further notice. They will follow a schedule similar to the Fall schedule in which they attended either 4 or 5 days per week. If your student lives in the bus zone or has bus service written into their IEP, they will continue to have transportation. Please reach out to your student's case manager for any questions.

Special Education Services

We are still working on SPED schedules for grades K-5 currently as elementary schedules have changed due to the updates mentioned on November 16th and we need further information before finalizing K-5 SPED schedules.

In general, students who have Special Education services will remain in in-person learning and will remain in this schedule until further notice. They will follow this schedule _____TBA_________(drop off at __TBA__ am and pick up at school at __TBA___). In some specific cases, students may be served in a different model and you will be contacted by the case manager directly if that is the case. If your student lives in the bus zone or has bus service written into their IEP, they will continue to have transportation. Please reach out to your student's case manager for any questions.

Further information and updates will be coming this week as we adjust to the fast rate of change required due to the increase in COVID rates locally. Please reach out with any questions you may have as we want to partner with you to provide the best quality distance learning experience that we can. We appreciate your support as we continue to navigate through these challenging times.

Message From the Superintendent

Dear WSD3 Staff & Families,

We continue to experience challenges in our school district with the rise of COVID-19 cases in our community. When positive cases lead to students and staff needing to quarantine for 10-14 days, those absences greatly impact the in-person learning environment.

Due to classroom coverage difficulties and in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community, Widefield School District 3 will be making the following changes immediately after Thanksgiving break through January 15, 2021:

Grades 3-12 will be in full distance learning at home

Preschool and K-2 students will continue in-person learning at school

K-12 students with special services will continue in-person services and learning and specific information will be coming from your child’s school

This decision was not made lightly. It is always our desire and intention to provide in-person learning for all students, and we believe that in-person learning is still the best option for primary students (PK-2). We will continue to consult with local health officials, monitoring county health data, and conferring with staff on when will be the safest time to return students to full in-person learning. In this unstable time, we feel like remote learning will provide consistent instruction for the majority of our students through the holidays.

Meals will continue to be served after Thanksgiving break using a grab and go format. More information will be forthcoming. Students who are currently transported to school for special services will continue to be transported.

We will remain flexible with our plans, but mindful of parents' needs, as we watch the current positivity rate in our community and wait for updates from El Paso County Public Health.

Respectfully,

Scott Campbell-Superintendent
